Chapter 11 Summary

Back at the camp, Simpson asks Perry to write a letter to Lt. Carroll's wife to let her know what happened. Lobel admits that he feels it was his fault. He believes if he had just shot a few more Vietcong, then maybe the one that shot Lt. Carroll would have been dead. A new platoon leader arrives to replace Lt. Carroll, named Lt. Gearhart. The boys ask him questions and get to know him. Gearhart has been in the Southern region and says that people there think the worst of it is over.

The boys take a civilian pacification team around and Perry feels uncomfortable having civilians there. Then Peewee gets a letter from Perry's mother.
