Chapter 10 Summary

The squad sets up to ambush the Vietcong at night and kill a group of them. Then the boys start running back to their chopper and Lt. Carroll gets hit. No one can find his wound until they get to the actual hospital where Lt. Carroll dies.

Chapter 10 Analysis

As with most of Perry's experiences, the squad spends plenty of time waiting and a tiny amount of time fighting. It is the first time Perry has seen Vietcong and shot at them, though he can barely see them at all in the darkness. The Americans bomb the village where they had given gifts and calmed the people because there are more Vietcong in the area than they expected.
