Chapter 4 Summary

After dealing with Jenkins's body, Lt. Carroll tells them a little about his own past. Perry and Peewee find out how the men they replaced died: Stuck in a ditch that Lt. Carroll tried and was unable to save them from. Perry again tries to write a letter to his mother. Peewee chats with an enemy agent that was being held in a storage shed, but he just jokes around about it, as he does with everything. They all go to a nearby village to try to get supporters for their side. They bring Malaria pills to "make them love us" and give the villagers chocolate and C rations. Lobel and Perry befriend a little Vietnamese girl.

Chapter 4 Analysis

The moment Perry feels his mortality acutely for the first time is when he sees all the body bags. They are lined up and waiting, ready for each of the soldiers to die....
