Chapter 12 Summary

Several years before Sasha's death, the midwife comes to Flagg for help with her sick son. Flagg offers to cure the young man, but asks in exchange that the midwife do him a favor at the time of his asking. The midwife agrees. The day Sasha goes into labor with Thomas, the midwife is called, and Flagg asks for the favor she owes him. The midwife helps Sasha through the labor. However, at the moment of birth, the midwife inflicts a knife wound that causes Sasha to bleed to death, making it appear as though she has died from the birth.
