Summary

Chapter 15 returns to Crystal, Arleen, and their upstairs neighbor Trisha. One night, after repeatedly hearing Trisha’s boyfriend Chris attack and beat her, Crystal called the police. The police responded after three calls, arresting Chris and notifying Sherrena of the events. This was the third time in one month that the police had been called to that residence, thus, under city ordinances, Sherrena would be financially liable for any further police action there and could be subject to a fine or prison. To convince the city that she was addressing the issue, Sherrena evicted Arleen two days later. She eventually allowed Arleen a few extra days to move out in exchange for Crystal agreeing to move to one of Sherrena’s other properties. The situation was obviously stressful for Arleen, who, though she had been planning on moving, had not anticipated being forced...
