Summary

Chapter 9 returns to the present day as James hurries to Aimee’s car before she decides to leave. When she looks at him he sees not only longing but also resentment in her face. He realizes how badly he let her down. She is crying when she tells him she wondered what it would be like if James came back. She says she regrets not having found James sooner but knows that she cannot be around him. Because James cannot stand Aimee’s pain he pulls her onto his lap and they kiss. He wants to tell her about Phil and why he felt he had to follow him to Mexico but instead he apologizes for not staying with Aimee and helping her heal.
