Summary

It is late summer in Seoul. Everything is wet from monsoon season. Sunam takes Jisun to the movies, as Namin is spending her time in the library once again, determined to finish school in three years. Sunam and Jisun have become friendly since their night spent in the bathroom, particularly because Namin is busy with studying. Jisun asks Sunam to make a bet with her about what will happen in the movie, a game she sometimes plays with herself. Sunam finds it “an irritating business, this need of Jisun’s to make everything into a game, as if ordinary pleasure were not enough for her” (234).
