Gilgamesh travels near the ocean and reaches a tavern owned by Siduri. She sees Gilgamesh, and he is unkempt and wild looking, so Siduri thinks he must be a criminal. She locks the tavern door and refuses to let him. Gilgamesh tells Siduri who he is, but she doesn't believe that the great hero Gilgamesh, who slew the Bull of Heaven, would be downtrodden and wind burnt so far from home. Gilgamesh answers that he should be downtrodden and wild looking because of the enormity of his grief for Enkidu. He tells the woman that the death of Enkidu has caused him to be scared and depressed, because he knows that he, Gilgamesh, will face the same fate.
