After building a monument for Enkidu and finally burying his friend, Gilgamesh begins to fall apart. He gets rid of his fine clothing and stops taking care of himself. He is still upset about the death of Enkidu but also begins to realize that he will die too. Gilgamesh decides he is afraid to die and wants to live forever. In order to do this, he decides he must journey to see Utnapishtim, who is the only mortal ever granted immortality by the gods. Utnapishtim was a king before a great Flood which destroyed the world. The gods took Utnapishtim, saving him from the Flood and making him an immortal.
At the beginning of his journey, Gilgamesh wakes from a dream to see lions around him and he slays them all with his sword.....
