Enkidu has a dream in which the gods hold counsel. At this counsel of the gods, it is decided that since Gilgamesh and Enkidu killed both the Bull of Heaven and the demon Humbaba, then one of them must die. The gods said that Enkidu would die, but that Gilgamesh could not die. Shamash, the sun god and protector of Enkidu and Gilgamesh, protests that he was the one who ordered the two warriors to slay the demon. The other gods are angry with Shamash for being like friends to Gilgamesh and Enkidu.
