Chapters 33-36 Summary

Chapter 33 recounts the story of the previous chapter from the point of view of Raul. He is forced to pretend to be a fisherman, and miserably fails in his attempt. The men on the platform believe him to be a poacher and rush to detain him. He knocks a lieutenant off the platform into the dangerous water. When fleeing on the hawking mat, he encounters this man with shark like creatures surrounding him. He cannot leave the man. When he picks him up, the lieutenant attempts to kill Raul, and knocks him off the mat. As the mat flies back to the platform, the guards on the platform shoot him and the lieutenant falls dead into the water. Raul is trapped in the deadly water with no way back to the raft.
