Byx

Byx is the main character of the novel and the first-person narrator. She is a dairne, a race of dog-like creatures who stand on two legs, have human-like paws, and travel in packs after nearly being wiped out. However, it is an insult to refer to them as dogs, and Byx even says that dogs themselves are far less intelligent. Throughout the novel, Byx struggles with the idea that she is an endling, or the last of her species, and often wishes that she had died with the rest of her family. She struggles to trust Khara at first, but eventually develops a close friendship with her, Tobble, and Gambler and sees them as her new family.
