Book 5, Chapter 2 Summary

Bendrix is late for the funeral because he has to meet with a book reviewer named Waterbury. Much as Waterbury misreads his novels, Bendrix reluctantly agrees to meet him because Waterbury rates Bendrix's novels highly, if only because he is not popular yet.

At the meeting, Waterbury is joined by a lovely young woman named Sylvia. She is learning from Waterbury, but she clearly desires Bendrix.

After answering many of Waterbury's questions, Bendrix mentions that he needs to go to Sarah's funeral. Waterbury is uninterested but Sylvia is sympathetic and helps him figure out how to get there. Eventually, Bendrix escapes the interview and Sylvia joins him.

Book 5, Chapter 2 Analysis
