Book 4, Chapter 2 Summary

In order to support him and Sarah, Bendrix starts working harder and completing more of a work that he has been commissioned to write. The novel is a history of General Gordon and, though General Gordon was a very religious man, Maurice does not attack Gordon's God as strongly as he might because it is also Sarah's God.

During his research into the life of General Gordon, Bendrix runs into Parkis at the British Museum Reading Room, where Parkis is researching on another case. Seeing Parkis, Bendrix thinks back to Sarah and, as he does, he revels in the fact that he will have her very soon.

Then, eight days after meeting Sarah in the church, Bendrix receives a call from Henry. Henry tells Bendrix that Sarah is dead.
