Book 3, Chapter 7 Summary

On January 18, 1946, Sarah is eating lunch with Maurice and she sees that Maurice is trying to hurt her. However, his attempts to hurt her only succeed because he hurts himself and Sarah does not like to see him do that to himself.

During lunch, Sarah wonders if she has broken her promise to avoid him, but she does not think so because there is no romantic intention on her part. Instead, she is merely enjoying his company without expecting more. However, when they leave, Maurice tries to kiss her but, fortunately, a coughing fit hits her, ending the moment. Therefore, instead of having a moment with Maurice, Sarah goes to a church to be with God.
