Part 1, Down Below: Chapters 7-12 Summary

Chapter 7. Nassau. Deuce and Fade are attacked by dozens of Freaks who try to get to them inside the metal emergency shelter. It is overwhelming odds, but Deuce and Fade manage to kill enough of them that the survivors run away. Again it appears the Freaks have become more intelligent, a fact that worries them both. When it is over, they continue their journey only to discover that Nassau was overrun and there are no survivors. They quickly turn and leave. That night, Fade finds them shelter in a strange place filled with artifacts. Deuce collects a few for the Wordkeeper.

Chapter 8. Darkness. Deuce and Fade walk for hours in the darkness, aware of vague sounds behind them. Then Deuce is suddenly grabbed and pulled into a crevice in the wall. Deuce finds herself a...
