Chapters 1-3 Summary

Enchantment is a modern fairy tale that is based on many of the fairy tales that come from Russia, including the evil witch Baba Yaga.

In Chapter 1, Ivan learns that his parents have decided to embrace their Jewish heritage. Ivan is given a Jewish name, Iztak Shlomo, and told he will have to be circumcised. Ivan leaves the house and runs for miles to escape the circumcision, but after his father has one and he learns a Jewish story in which a warrior had a whole city circumcised before attacking, he decides to go through with it. Shortly after, Ivan's father loses his job and the family is homeless. They are forced to move in with family until their visas come through.
