Jim is afraid of the dangers awaiting him at the hands of the desperate refugees wandering the countryside between the stadium and Shanghai. So Jim heads back to Lunghua Airfield, just a little more than one half mile away. On arriving at the airfield he sees Japanese mechanics wandering among the wreckage. Jim wanders around in the wreckage of the planes waiting for the American planes to arrive at Lunghua. He has eaten nothing for two days but feels his mind is clear. A little distance away he sees a Japanese kamikaze pilot moving around the planes, upset, and trying to will them into the air. The pilot notices Jim too. Jim begins to follow the pilot, fifty yards behind him, as he moves through the airfield. Eventually the pilot beckons.....
