Act 1, Scene 3 Summary

The moon has just risen over the forest. The scene opens to the beat of the tom-tom, louder and faster now. Gradually, a Negro man, Jeff appears and starts to shoot craps on the floor of the forest. He is dressed in a Pullman car's suit.

Jones appears out of the forest thinking that he has walked for hours but clearly, he has not as the moon has just risen. He is glad for the moonlight though because now he can see his way a little clearer. He surveys himself and chuckles a bit at how he no longer looks very majestic in his torn and dirty clothes but it was all just part of a game anyway. He hears the drum.....
