Summary

It is Spring. Cathy watches traveler lads pull up in a caravan with dirt bikes and try to hunt rabbits. They are not as good as Daddy at handling animals and they often accidentally wound the animals without capturing them. One night, after helping Daddy chop logs with an Axe, Daniel finds that he cannot sleep. He feels that "because my eyes were so bright and alive, my thoughts were too" as he thought of colorful images of the woods (148). He sees Cathy by the kitchen window, who also cannot sleep. She says that she is too angry to sleep. She says that she is angry all the time and asks if Danny is too, but he says that he is not.
