Summary

Years later and miles away, there is no trace of the sister as the brother searches for her as he trudges in mud. An unnamed first-person narrator remembers an evening in the house. The narrator continues a journey from Elmet toward a familiar town alongside towers of a power station.

Chapter Three describes the family's penchant for archery. Daddy moves his children in the woods to keep them apart from the world (48). Daddy teaches the children to make their own bows and arrows from materials from the woods and they played archery. Cathy uses her bow in such a way that she hyper extends and bruises her forearm. Daddy attempts to correct her but she does not change her method. Daddy is angry, but expresses it in a way that it is mixed with love.
