Chapter 9 Summary

Eventually, Ellen's father comes looking for her, arriving at her school one day during naptime. Ellen senses that he is there before she actually lays eyes upon him. Ellen's teacher just happens to be on coffee break when he arrives, and from his parking space in the marigold beds, he orders Ellen outside, waving money at her as incentive. The teacher returns and tries to get Ellen and the class to return to their nap. Ellen can't resist responding, however, and tells her father to drop the money and go home. Eventually, the police come, handcuff Ellen's father and take him away. Julia comes to Ellen's rescue and takes her home. Later, Roy and Julia come to break the news to Ellen that the courts have decided she must return to her family......
