Summary

In Chapter 19, Rowan begins to dig, hoping to find Lark, then realizes they will have to carry Ash if they want to save him. Ash no longer carries an inhaler with him and he is soon in deep distress. As they walk through the outer circles, Lachlan says none of the legitimate residents of Eden remember the repair work that was recently performed there, or how their lives changed when the buildings were repaired and jobs provided. They go to Lachlan's brother's home and Rowan has to perform a tracheotomy to save Ash's life.

In Chapter 20, Lachlan says he did not find the forest, and that he traveled as far as he could. They arrive at the Underground and Flint meets them, saying Rowan and Ash are no longer welcome. Flint says they will help only second children from this point. Rowan reveals...
