Summary

In Chapter 43, “The Waiting Room,” Dan has had a heart attack and is in the hospital. Jen confirms that he has had another heart attack, which surprises the children who did not know about the first one. Dan is stabilized but needs rest so the kids leave the hospital, but Jen stays with him.

In Chapter 44, "Sebastopol, California 2009,” the narrative flashes back to 2009, with Jen and Dan spending a month in Big Sur for a vacation. Jen was frustrated with Dan because he was not putting forth any effort to having a good time; all he wanted to do was be at the vineyard. They were having marital problems and Dan did not know how to fix anything.
