In Chapter 7, other bags were missing off the bus. The driver spotted a car speeding away, probably carrying the stolen items. Everything was gone. L'Amour learned that there was mine assessment work available in Barstow, California, and headed there. Once in Barstow, L'Amour was taken to the Owl's Head Mountains by the old man who owned the claims which were for manganese ore.
