Chapter 12 & 13 Summary

Alice and Reacher discuss Carmen's case. Reacher is still convinced Carmen was abused. Alice asks Reacher to accompany her to the bank to cash Brewer's check, and then out to the family to deliver the twenty thousand. He agrees. Reacher hears about their eldest son, Raoul, and how border patrol shot him after he surrendered. In those days, it was sport, she explains. They share a tequila and go back to Pecos to find messages from Hack for Reacher. Hack tells Reacher he only escapes charges because he was in custody at the time. His prints are on the gun, all of the cartridges, and the magazine. Hack hires a defense expert to look over the medical records, still hoping to make a case for self defense.
