Chapters 3 and 4 Summary

Reacher asks Carmen what happened eighteen months ago that stopped the beatings. Carmen is reluctant to tell him but finally confesses that her husband was put in jail for tax evasion, and further probing reveals why she is so afraid of him being released. She is the one who called the IRS and turned him in. His sentence is to be no shorter than thirty months, and eighteen months of that has already passed.
