Excited to see her Usul, Chani nevertheless wonders why Paul has changed his mind and summoned her, even sending a 'thopter. Otheym, a Fedaykin lieutenant not usually assigned to escort Chani, hurries her underground, saying the Harkonnens are patrolling desperately. They go to Jessica's room, where the Reverend Mother sits staring, wondering how to tell Chani bad news. Chani observes the ritual greetings and news of Rabban's truce overtures being rebuffed, while worrying that Paul is absent. Jessica appears to be setting her up for grief while gauging how strong she is. Finally Jessica admits that she has sent the summons in Muad'Dib's name and needs Chani's help in reviving Paul. She believes the Harkonnens have poisoned him, although his blood reveals no toxins. He is unconscious with vital signs so.....
