Smugglers are swarming the dunes near low rock ledges. Halleck commands the spice factory, looking for a spice blow. When a 'thopter signals success, he plans an on-foot inspection, wary of Fremen looking to cut his throat. They are cunning and as well trained as the best veterans in the universe and he knows he is trespassing on their territory. As the crawler rolls out onto the sand, Halleck's platoon joins it. The ridge erupts with rocketry and Gurney finds himself face-to-face with a chrysknife. An oddly familiar voice tells him by name not to go for his knife and to call off his men.
