As they approach Cave of the Ridges at dawn, Stilgar assigns defensive positions on the cliffs, the kind of guerilla thinking that Leto once fears will be needed by House Atreides. Inside the cave, Chani gives Paul food and drink and orders him out of the way. The food reeks of spice. Door seals are secured to retain moisture. Stilgar points to home, across the basin, where they will arrive next day. People working outside means there are no patrols. Discipline insures survival, and leaders are those who are strongest and bring water and security. Jessica hopes she has not compromised Stilgar's leadership.
