Paul and Jessica sit huddled in a stilltent wearing Fremen clothing collected from the first 'thopter and they are flown to an isolated spot by Idaho in the second. Awaiting his return, Jessica understands Yueh's predicament and Paul cannot mourn his father. He wonders about the future, if Idaho fails to get through to Kyne, while Jessica is certain the key figures will re-gather. Paul's first concern is to safeguard the family atomics and he is not prepared, like Jessica, to escape into "renegade anonymity." The Sardaukar cannot risk exposing the Emperor's part by staying too long.

Jessica weeps for her Duke and thinks of the daughter in her womb. A small receiver shows the Harkonnens winning. If Idaho has not returned by the next nightfall, they must assume he is.....
