Jessica stands surrounded by belongings in the great hall of their new home. The architecture bespeaks monstrous cost and waste, but pales before Carthag, the Harknonnen's megapolis. Two artifacts have special significance: a painting of the Duke's late father dressed as a matador and the mounted head of the black bull that kills him. Leto insists they be hung in the dining room. Jessica finds Leto more savage and driving since being ordered to Arrakis. Hawat has cleared the household employees. Hatred of the Harknonnens is widespread. The Fremen want to observe a while before allying but have agreed not to raid villages. They are strong, vital, and committed people. Fighting fatigue, Leto returns to the landing field to deal with Harknonnen intrigues. The Imperial Planetologist and "Judge of the Change".....
