Points of View
Most of the stories occur through Yunior's first-person point of view, but there is a dramatic and wonderful variation in "No Face," where Ysrael's inner life is finally revealed. This is one of the highlights of the collection, because up until this point, Ysrael is viewed by Rafa and most people in the village as being a freak, a horrible aberration, someone to fear and to punish. When his point of view is revealed in "No Face," the reader experiences him as a wonderful person. Similarly, the final story in the collection,"Negocios," reveals Papi's struggles through his own first-person narration, showing both his good and bad points, his moments of generosity and kindness and also his terrible self-indulgence. Until then, all the reader can do is hate and resent Papi just as his family members hate and resent him.
