One evening, Poole arrives at Utterson's door, very upset. He says he's afraid for Dr. Jekyll, who's been shut up again in the cabinet, and he fears foul play. Without offering further details, he begs Utterson to come back to the house with him.
Utterson goes, finding all of Jekyll's servants huddling around the fire in the hall, terror-stricken. Poole takes Utterson through the courtyard to the cabinet door, where he calls to Dr. Jekyll that Utterson is here to see him. The voice on the other side of the door says he cannot see anyone. Poole leads Utterson away, and then asks the lawyer if he recognized Jekyll's voice.
Utterson says the voice was indeed changed, but Poole insists it wasn't his master's voice at all. He's afraid the doctor was taken away.....
