Summary

Chapter 1 opens in a remote village in Poland. Janina Duszejko is an elderly woman who lives alone in a cabin in the woods. She has neighbors who live in other cabins in the woods, but the cabins are still fairly distant from each other. One night, she is suddenly visited by a neighbor of hers, whom she simply refers to as Oddball. Oddball says that he visited one of their other neighbors—whom Janina simply calls Big Foot—and found him dead. Janina is shocked and horrified, although she did dislike Big Foot. Specifically, Janina loves animals and hated Big Foot because he was an avid hunter. They go to his cabin and find him nearly naked on the floor of his cabin. They also find a deer that he killed. It is quite evident that Big Foot die from choking on a deer...
