Caroline Knapp is the narrator and protagonist of the novel. Throughout the entire book, she details her struggle and love story with alcohol. Knapp is a sophisticated, pretty, and smart young woman who seems to have the world at her feet. She is from a wealthy family, extremely well educated and working on improving her professional life.
