Leaving Mina behind to keep her from possible harm, the four men visit Carfax to look for the wooden boxes. They head for the chapel, which expels nauseating odors as they enter. They find only twenty-nine of the fifty boxes. A strange glow appears, and soon the chapel is filled with rats, which are eventually chased out by dogs the men have brought along.
When Harker returns to Mina in their rooms at the asylum, he finds her asleep but looking pale. The next day she feels unwell and is anxious, partly due to the fact that from now on, for her protection, she will not be informed on the progress of the plan to defeat Dracula. She recalls her strange experience of the night before, when a thick mist filled.....
