Chapter 7 Summary

A newspaper article describes a terrible storm that hits the area and turns the sea into a tempest of high waves and thick mists. The Russian ship that Mr. Swales noted becomes the object of great attention during the storm as the townspeople gather to watch. It seems certain the ship will wreck, but miraculously it lands safely on the shore. No crew is aboard except for the captain, who is dead, bound by rope to the wheel. The ship's cargo consists of fifty large wooden boxes. A large dog is seen emerging from the lower deck. It jumps ship, races up a nearby cliff and disappears. The ship's log describes how, one by one, the crew disappeared from the vessel. In the final entry, the captain describes a terrifying "fiend or monster".....
