Chapter 5 Summary

In letters between Mina and Lucy, Mina discusses her upcoming marriage to Harker and how she hopes to be able to assist him with her shorthand and typing skills. She has a letter from him saying that he is coming home soon. Lucy describes the three men who have recently proposed marriage to her: Dr. John Seward, head of the local lunatic asylum; Mr. Quincey Morris from Texas; and Arthur Holmwood, whose proposal she accepted. Seward confesses in his diary that he is depressed by Lucy's refusal of marriage. In addition, he describes a strange patient who greatly interests him, a Mr. Renfield, who is possibly dangerous.
