Jonathan Harker leaves Munich on his journey to Transylvania to conduct business for Count Dracula. He describes the research he conducted previously to learn about the history, customs and geography of the region he is traveling to. On the second night of his journey, he stays at inn where the landlord and his wife express fear for Harker's safety. The wife begs Harker not to travel the coming night because it is the eve of St. George's Day, when "all evil things in the world will have their sway." Because he is determined to go, she presents him with a crucifix that she says will protect him. Harker is both bemused and irritated by what he views as the silly superstitions of these peasants.
On the last leg of Harker's trek he meets Dracula's.....
