Chapters 7-8 Summary

Lauren and Nick spend the day sailing. Lauren asks Nick about himself, specifically about his family. Nick tells Lauren that his father died when he was young. When pressed, Nick tells Lauren how his mother was a rich debutante who left a rich fiancé to marry his father and promptly regretted it. Nick's mother was miserable living the life of working class housewife. When Nick's father died, his mother spared no time in running back to the fiancé she jilted and returning to her life of luxury. Lauren cries as she imagines the poor little boy left behind by his mother to be raised by his poor grandparents. Nick teases Lauren until she brushes off her emotions with a touch of humor. Lauren tries to get Nick to talk more about himself, but he seems reluctant.
