It is springtime and everything looks wonderful for April Corrigan. A "redhot tennis player" in the eleventh grade, she happily anticipates going to the senior prom with her steady boyfriend, Steve, and to attending his high school graduation. But her normal family life with her younger brother, Bram, her author mother, Liz, and their overweight cocker spaniel, Corky, ends when suddenly, it turns out that her father is something other than the airline employee April believed him to be.

Without warning, April and her family are whisked away from Steve, her feisty grandmother, Lorelei, and all her friends to become part of the government program providing new identities for important government witnesses.

Mr. Corrigan has been working for the F.B.I., pursuing a drug dealer against whom he must testify in court.
