Loss of Identity

This is the major theme of the novel. Once April is abruptly taken from home, the whole world she knew, as well as her place in it, no longer exists except in her memories, which she clings to desperately. At the beginning she has hope that the events are only temporary. Soon enough it becomes clear that it will be a long time before she can resume her old life, if ever. Once they are in the witness protection program, the reality of the situation becomes too daunting. She has become a person she does not recognize physically or emotionally.
