At the beginning of the novel April wakes in her bedroom and looks at a prism Steve gave her that hangs from a window. It symbolizes a 'years worth of rainbows' together. April takes the prism with her, a rare possession from her past. At the end of the novel, she meets a boy in a mall who is considering buying a prism for his mother. April tells him it is a symbol for new beginnings. Meeting the boy and starting a new life is her new beginning and a reason for her to take out her old prism and hang it up again.
