April Corrigan, an eleventh grader, is the central character of the novel. In a first person voice, she relates the events that changed the course of her life forever when her family is forced into hiding under the Federal Witness Security Program. At the beginning of the novel she is happy and carefree, in love with her boyfriend Steven, an avid tennis player, and living the life of a middle-class "princess." Once she is abruptly whisked away from her Camelot, she becomes increasingly frustrated but hopeful the situation is only temporary. She is egocentric and focused only on her priorities, and is unable to comprehend the real threats her family is under.
