Chapter 5 Summary

Several days later, April assumes that Steve would have received the letter and would be relieved to have heard from her. Liz is writing her children's book in longhand, which, on top of wine, makes her drowsy in the evenings and she turns in early to bed. The relationship is strained between Jim and April but they agree to call a truce after Jim apologizes. April feels bad she was rude to Jim as he reminds her of her grandfather who died when she was twelve. She also apologizes for her behavior. Jim talks about his arthritis, and how he could never spend the day writing like Liz, foreshadowing his eventual fate.
