Chapter 3 Summary

The family arrives at the Mayflower Hotel on the outskirts of Richmond, Virginia, about a two-hour drive from Norwood. Jim Peterson tells them that they are never to leave the room or make phone calls. They must use room service only so the only people they will ever encounter are from the kitchen or maid staff. April is upset that she can't call Steve, knowing he'll get worried when he stops by her house and discovers she is gone. She gets so frustrated that she marches into one of the bedrooms and watches television. She thinks about calling Steve when the phone rings. She picks it up and overhears a conversation between Jim and Max. Max describes a threatening letter aimed at George's family. He also says that if George has the information.....
