James Herriot
Herriot is the author of the stories and a veterinarian from Scotland who joins the practice of Siegfried and Tristan Farnon in Darrowby — a small town in Yorkshire County. He is among the first veterinarians to practice small animal medicine in a rural community where the focus is on horses, sheep, cows and pigs. This, plus the fact that he is from Scotland, makes him even more of an outsider when he first joins the clinic operated by the Farnon brothers. Often his only reward for caring for dogs is seeing them get better, as many of his clients can't afford to pay him much—or anything—for his services. His love for the people, animals and countryside of Darrowby in Yorkshire County is evident throughout the book.
