Summary

The title of Chapter 9 is “Cannery Grow.” Petey goes to a store called Cannery Grow where he has to deal with a stupid clerk. The clerk repeats herself and takes a long time to deal with Petey, which makes him angry. Pilkey dedicates 18 panels to the clerk's effort to enter Petey's phone number into her cash register. She then asks if Petey wants to apply for a Cannery Grow discount membership but Petey is furious and shouts at her, including that he gave her a fake phone number. The clerk begins to cry, calling Petey “mean” (178). Petey hands her some “honk rags” (179) and admits that he should be nicer.
