Act 4, Scene 3 Summary

Faustus is dining in the home of the Duke and Duchess of Vanholt and the Duke is very taken with Faustus. However, Faustus is also anxious to please the pregnant Duchess, so he asks her if there is anything he can do for her. The Duchess admits that she has a craving for grapes and, hearing her request, Faustus sends Mephastophilis out to fetch a plate of the best grapes that the Duchess has ever tasted.

The Duke and Duchess are utterly amazed, as it is the middle of winter and there are no grapes to be had anywhere. However, Faustus explains to them that there are many places in the world where it is summer, so he simply sent a spirit to go fetch them. This final trick leaves another nobleman thoroughly awestruck and the Duke promises to reward Faustus well.
